When Handel was given a biblical text by Charles Jennens, he set aside. 18 months later, desperate for composition, he picked it back up. Handel did not leave his home for 24 days; he sat composing until the great oratorio, The Messiah, was completed. It is reported that when Handel wrote the Hallelujah chorus, his assistant found him in tears saying “I did think I saw heaven open, and saw the very face of God”.
