I have so many favorite children’s books. And this one – it’s right near the top! I want to buy 50 and present them at every baby shower, wedding, and birthday party.
Munro Leaf is best known for writing Ferdinand the Bull, a best-seller since 1936. I didn’t know he wrote these fantastic child-rearing guidebooks.
Manners Can Be Fun by Munro Leaf. What a wonderful discovery! Reading the reviews on Amazon, it sounds like this book was a childhood favorite in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. After a reprint in 2004, it’s making a comeback. Mr. Leaf died a year before I was born. I would have liked to write him a glowing letter of admiration.I bought this as a Christmas present for the children, partly so they would laugh. Well, we did laugh – it’s hilarious, but as soon as Brynne started reading, we were hooked. Funny, with a fantastic message.
A few excerpts:How to say good morning, good afternoon, and good evening. As in, “Good morning, mother. I hope you slept well last night.” Remember, we should be as nice to our family as we are to others.
Oh no, when it’s time to get up, we do not have to be called more than once. We brush our teeth without fussing and making faces. (love it!) See those towels on the floor? We don’t leave them for others to pick up.
Now, when I hear a Whiney in the house, I say, “Don’t be a Whiney!” Oh yes, the kiddies love that.
It’s the basics, told brilliantly.
Simple pictures, simple sentences for easy reading, and BIG message. What I really love about this book, is that it delightfully teaches a child to behave better, but also shows that better behavior translates to happier children and families. Isn’t that every parent’s wish?
Most delightful, worthwhile children’s book I’ve read in awhile. Highly recommended!
Munro Leaf books I’m ordering next: How to Behave and Why, How to Speak Politely and Why, Reading Can Be Fun.
